Lily One Last Life Lecture: HIMYM Season 9 Episode 3 “Last Time in New York” Recap

Why not just say good-bye to all the bad things,

to all the times it was a no instead of a yes

On Friday at 2:00 PM, 52 hours before the wedding. Lily discovers Ted’s list of things-to-do in New York before he moves to Chicago and she’s frustrated for being the only one who knows about it. As she goes through the items on the list, she finds how much Ted loves New York. The only thing not checked off on Ted’s list is “one last scotch with Barney”. Lily forces Ted to admit whether he’s been avoiding Barney and Robin since the day he tried to help Robin find her locket at the carousel. Meanwhile, Robin and Barney worried that the drive and passion in their relationship will fade away after they’re married. They look for a place to have sex one last time, and they found that Robin's great grandparents are still ready to jump each other even after 60 years of marriage. Thinking about that, they stop worrying about being old boring couple.

Here goes the list. Ted fixed graffiti from "your" to "you're", said goodbye to the Empire State Building, came clean to Lily for the dress that he ruined while he and Marshall were reenacting "The Princess Bride."  

Lily is upset and punishes him to wear Waldo costume, and make Marshal wear Green Bay Packers costume (against his loyalty to Minnesota Vikings). But then Ted learned from Robin, that Lily and her also had a sword fight and ruined Ted $600 scotch for Barney. They changed it with cheap whisky-chocolate syrup-ketchup-hand sanitizer. 

When Robin found out about the list, Lily covered up for Ted. She said it was her list-to-do before she's going to Italy. 

Ted asked her why would she help him when she’s also against his moving. For a guy who loves New York this much, to leave it, Ted must be desperate to go, she said. Based on the list, Lily realizes that Ted is only say good-bye to all the good things, but not to the bad things. She encourages him to say good-bye to all the times he felt lost, like the break up, the bruises, the times it was a no instead of a yes. Ted should have the first scotch toasting Barney's new life, not the last one. This scene brings us back to the Ted’s memory, when he went through all the breakups in the past. Lily convinces Ted to say goodbye to all the bad things since the good things will always be waiting for him.

Ted finally decides to face Barney and bring him the scotch. But before Ted can offer a toast, Barney reveals that he had seen Ted and Robin at the carousel where she had been looking for her missing locket.
