The Battle of Proposals: Modern Family Season 5 First Ep "Suddenly, Last Summer" Review

"Every Couple Deserves A Beautiful Proposal Story"

It finally legal for gay marriage in California. Can you guess what about to happen? Yes right, Cam and Mitch are going to propose each other without knowing it. Hilarious.. 

Plot: 

When Cam comes by to Gloria's place, she encourages Cam to propose Mitch today. At the same time, Claire suggests Mitch to  propose Cam at once. We know eventually that they are going to ruin each other proposal plan. When Cam takes Mitch to the restaurant where they had their first date, he suddenly realizes that Cam is going to propose him there and he excuses himself to leave and back home. Even though he feels touched, Mitch thinks it will destroy his proposal to be romantic for the first time.

"He was ruining the one chance I had for romantic redemption" - Mitch

Without running out of idea, Cam already has a back-up plan back at their home. He asked Gloria and Jay to re-create a picnic under the stars He and Mitch had the night they moved in the first apartment. At the same time Claire is setting up two rocking chairs next to the fireplace in Mitch and Cam's place, with a bottle of champagne. It's Mitch idea to propose to Cam because Cam once told him that all he wanted was someone to sit in a rocking chair and grow old with. But on their way back home, they get a flat tire. Mitch and Cam were rather upset because they both knew in the heart that tonight's plan is ruined. 

“This is not at all how I saw the evening going”- Mitch

“Ohh. Honey, you have no idea” - Cam

But, then suddenly Mitch say "All right, Let's do this". As They both kneel to change the tire, they look into each other eyes. Then we know that they know, that there is no moment more perfect than this. Without saying a word, they share a smile and say "yes" at the same time. I must say I like how the writer made the story. They race to propose each other, the plans ruined, but they finally find the perfect way to do it. It's the win win solution for both of them.

This episode gets emotional, when we learned about every couple's proposal story. This is why Modern Family won Emmy for the last 4 years. It’s not just funny but also touching and feel real about family life.

Claire and Phil Proposal

You can see how thoughtful Phil proposed to Claire while he's setting up the place with magic and candle so smoothly. There's no detail that He forget, even stuff like matchbook with the fake number she gave him. Well, I can stop laughing and feel so touched at the same time. Claire and Phil will always be my favorite couple from the show. 

Claire feel guilty and told him that the reason why Phil's dad wanted Phil to come visit him for couples day, because she wanted some days free for herself. Then bams! Out of sudden, one text came from Claire's mom, then we know that Phil also wants some days off too.

Gloria and Jay Proposal

We learned Gloria and Jay story. One day, we were watching TV before dinner, and Jay says, "Manny, hand me that thing”. At least Javier was on top of a dolphin" - Gloria

Later, we found out that was not the whole story. Jay was asking the remote TV and Manny supposed to hand him the ring in dinner where Jay had the proposal planned .

"The waiter was gonna come by and offer coffee. I was gonna say no thank you, it'll keep me up... and lately, I've been loving my dreams, and there's one in particular .I hope comes true. Manny gives me the ring. and I said Gloria..." Jay says.

 Gloria touched and said  ".. yes Jay I marry you. I love my new story"

It's definitely a good episode to start the season. Tell me, what you think..
